Initial Consultation
The first step in finding the right treatment is locating the source of the problem. The professionals at La Jolla Vein Care take a comprehensive approach to vein care. The initial physician consultation includes a 30-minute assessment, diagnosis of the vein condition, and discussion of treatment options. The initial assessment might include the use of a special instrument called the Veinlite or a duplex ultrasound evaluation to identify underlying veins not visible to the naked eye. After an accurate diagnosis is made, the treatment plan will be individualized to produce optimal results with minimal pain and downtime.
Cost & Payment Options
The cost for vein treatment varies depending on the individual’s vein condition and number of treatments required. The only way to get an accurate assessment of cost is to schedule a physician consultation. For your convenience, we accept all major credit cards and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA). FSA typically covers all office services. Additionally, we offer Chase Financing, which allows you to pay for your treatment with a no-interest option.
Insurance
Venous conditions are identified as either medically necessary or cosmetic. Since insurance companies do not always consider vein treatments medically necessary, coverage depends on the individual policy holder.
We accept the following major insurance types and most insurance carriers with out-of-network benefits:
- Scripps Employee Health Insurance
- Bluecross/ Blueshield
- Anthem
- United Healthcare
- Scripps Employee Health Insurance
Scheduling Treatment
For patients seeking treatments for spider veins, treatment can begin the same day of the initial consultation. Please tell our staff in advance if you desire treatment on the same day to ensure that the appropriate measures can be made. Spider vein treatment is not considered by insurance as medically necessary and is not covered by insurance.
Varicose veins require a special evaluation with duplex ultrasound with detailed vein mapping of the anatomy. A duplex ultrasound examination can be scheduled the same day as the initial consultation. Due to the time requirements and case-by-case basis, varicose vein treatment requires a second appointment.
If insurance coverage is desired, there are specific criteria that have to be met in order for insurance to pay. This varies by the individual policy, but in general the varicose veins or venous disease must cause symptoms that interfere with one’s ability to work or with daily activities or have caused complications such as phlebitis or skin changes. In most cases, insurance companies require that a trial of conservative measures have been tried for at least 6 weeks. Conservative measures include compression stockings, leg elevation, exercise, weight loss or maintaining a healthy weight, NSAIDS or other medication and hot/cold packs.
