Dr. Bunke-Paquette Speaks About Venous Leg Ulcers at UCSD’s 35th Annual Assembly In Surgery Conference

On Friday, April 20 Dr. Bunke-Paquette joined distinguished faculty to participate in UCSD’s 35th Annual Assembly in Surgery, held in the Hard Rock Hotel in San Diego, California. She discussed the modern management of venous leg ulcers to the attendees who were surgeons. One of Dr. Bunke-Paquette’s area of expertise is in the treatment of the venous leg ulcers. She discussed new methods of treatment for the venous leg ulcer. Dr. Bunke-Paquette explained how the goal of treatment is to eliminate the underlying venous insufficiency, which is the cause for the venous leg ulcer. She described non-surgical treatment methods such as foam sclerotherapy and endovenous radiofrequency and laser ablation therapies.
The 35th Annual Postgraduate Assembly in Surgery is a 4-day conference that was designed to bring the practicing surgeon up-to-date on the latest developments in general surgery and surgical specialties.

‘Healthy Legs Event’ Participants Put Their Best Legs Forward

Free varicose vein screenings and duplex ultrasound examinations were performed all day long for La Jolla Vein Care’s Healthy Legs Event. Scripps Ximed Employees participated in the vein screenings and learned more about how standing occupations, such as those in the healthcare field can contribute to leg vein problems. Refreshments and gift bags were given out, which were filled with goodies including Pop Chips, which were donated by Pop Chips San Diego.
Sigvaris-Life for Legs was present to offer compression stockings at 20% off retail and for custom fittings. Sigvaris introduced their everyday medical grade compression stockings in sheer as well as performance compression socks for athletes.
Overall, the event helped increase awareness about leg vein health amongst health care workers and guests.

What Is the Correlation Between Restless Legs Syndrome and Venous Insufficiency?

Patients with varicose veins often report a feeling of restless legs, especially at night when in bed. In our study, about 30% of patients with varicose veins complained of restless legs. Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a sensorimotor movement disorder characterized by uncomfortable sensations in the legs and an urge to move them. There are other causes of restless legs syndrome such as, neurological disorders, anemia, and kidney disease to name a few and is often treated with medication. Venous insufficiency is often neglected as a cause of Restless Legs Syndrome. However, when recognized, it is easily treatable leading to resolution of symptoms.
Treatment is aimed at correcting the underlying venous insufficiency. This usually is accomplished by removing the varicose veins or incompetent veins by new, minimally invasive, non-surgical methods. In our study, 98% of the patients with venous insufficiency and restless legs, had resolution of symptoms following treatment.
In another study, by Hayes, CL et. al, 35 patients with RLS and superficial venous insufficiency underwent endovenous ablation of refluxing superficial veins and ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy of varicose veins. 89% of patients reported alleviation of symptoms.
If a patient has restless legs symptoms and evidence of varicose veins of the legs, a work-up for venous insufficiency should be considered. The work-up involves a duplex ultrasound evaluation of the leg veins. This may eliminate the need for medication for RLS.
